Tiferno
Description:
Tucked away in the historical town centre of Città di Castello this elegant and beautifully restored apartment occupies the top two floors of what was originally a medieval building.
Access from the street is by means of an enormous studded door with locks and bolts dating back to mediaeval times and the hallway has some fabulous stone features including the stairway. A useful and modern addition is the lift which travels from the ground floor and reaches the apartment with only a few paces to walk.
The front door to the aprtment opens directly into the main reception room which, like the rest of the property, is immaculate and tastefully decorated. In this room there is a yellow marble fireplace (the marble is from Siena) and parquet flooring. Pretty glass doors lead to the kitchen and to the formal dining room; both of which overlook the street. The kitchen is well laid out with plenty of storage space and the dining room is large, elegant and again, beautifully decorated.
A corridor leads from the living area and curves around the small courtyard that sits below, the corridor leads to a laundry room, a pretty guest bedroom, a bathroom which has access from both the corridor and the guest room and a master bedroom with an enormous and well designed bathroom. Steps in the master bedroom lead down to a fabulous, almost secret, study/library which eventually leads to the main staircase where there is a second entrance. The rooms along this corridor and therefore above the courtyard, are exceedingly quiet as is the living room itself. A huge plus in a busy market town!
Stairs from the living room lead up to the top floor, originally an attic space, with a galleried corridor overlooking the living area. Two bedrooms and a bathroom have been cleverly fitted into this area and the roof, above the bedrooms, bathroom and living area, has been fitted with skylights. The final room in the house is perhaps the most beautiful and certainly the most interesting, as it is right in the rafters, some of which have been cut away and supported with metal beams and straps. The room is on three levels and currently houses a grand piano which cannot be removed! Like the study, the room is full of books and has a wonderfully warm and secure feeling, almost like a gentleman’s club without the smoke! It also has the added advantage of a terrace with a view of the surrounding town.
This lovely property is immaculate, mainly because it was restored less than ten years ago but also because it has been lovingly looked after by the current owners. Every aspect of it has been well thought out; the parquet floors and lovely iron work throughout, the well designed kitchen and bathrooms, the clever storage spaces the addition of the skylights and the lift. That said the property retains many of the old original features; the old stone and wood work, the beautiful “graniglia” marble staircase and most of all the general atmosphere of timeless elegance and history.
